Ubuntu 12.04 Unity tips

Posted by

After settling in to Unity for the last week or so, I’ve started to customize a bit.  Overall, I quite like Unity’s defaults, yet there are a few key changes that I needed to make to make the stay comfortable:

Change Alt + Tab to switch all windows (Normally Ctrl + Alt + Tab) (from Ask Ubuntu)

It is beyond me why anyone would only want to switch between windows on the current workspace.  If someone has an explanation as to why this is the default, I’d love to hear it.

gconftool --set --type=string /apps/compiz-1/plugins/unityshell/screen0/options/alt_tab_forward_all 'Tab'
gconftool --set --type=string /apps/compiz-1/plugins/unityshell/screen0/options/alt_tab_forward 'Tab'

Figure out how to switch workspaces (from Ask Ubuntu)

The shortcut Ctrl+Alt + arrow keys allows you to move in the workspaces.
