Thinkfan: A quieter ThinkPad

Posted by

Following two guides I have found a great way to greatly reduce the fan noise of my ThinkPad X61 tablet and X61s.  Here’s what I did:

  • sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install thinkfan psensor
  • sudo vi /etc/modprobe.d/thinkfan.conf and add the line:

options thinkpad_acpi fan_control=1

  • sudo vi etc/default/thinkfan and add the line:

START=yes

  • sudo vi /etc/thinkfan.conf replace the content with:

sensor /proc/acpi/ibm/thermal (0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 22, 0)
(0, 0, 62)
(1, 56, 65)
(2, 60, 70)
(5, 68, 72)
(7, 70, 32767)

Then, restart.

The above has greatly silenced my respective ThinkPads. As a result, they do run hotter. Personally, I’d rather enjoy using a machine until it burns out, but if system noise doesn’t irritate you, you may prefer to leave things as-is.
