First Post!

Hello there.  It’s a new year, so I’m starting a new blog.  Please allow me to introduce myself:  I’m Ben Hall.  I wear a few hats.  For this blog, I will mostly be wearing the hat of co-founder of the small web company that my wife and I started in 2011.

As I write this, GoSaBe is the full-time preoccupation of my wife, Dr. Sarah-Jane Whittaker.  Sarah completed her PhD in September of 2011.  Our business started up in earnest in May 2011, when she shifted to part-time studies.  We’ve had a few big customers since then and have been busy enough that we haven’t had to advertise yet.  (Yeah!)

At the moment, we are working on a mix of websites for small businesses and a few for Queen’s University and related organizations.  We also offer hosting for many of our customers, and I have been doing some related sysadmin consulting work.  As my wife is a fantastic programmer, we’re also keeping an eye on mobile app development, with plans to move in that direction in 2012.  Oh, and Sarah loves teaching, so we’re also hoping that this will be part of what we do.

I’m not exactly sure what this blog will be or if anyone will find it interesting.  My current plan is to discuss aspects of the technology that we work with as we help our customers  I already have tales of dealing with Russian hackers and WordPress sites, dealing with Drupal 7 for a customer while key plugins were in very early development stages, migrating standalone sites to CMSs, and a host of other systems happenings. I’ll also likely intersperse these technical posts with general ones on running a boot-strapped home-based web business. Finally, I’m hoping that Sarah will take a bit of time to blog as well, as she is the full-timer in this operation.

Thanks for making it this far. I hope that we can create an interesting reading experience for you.

Happy New Year!
